We CAN Stop This DEADLY HAZARD!
As Riders, we all know the life-threatening hazard, that mere, grass clippings pose before us, on our endearing roadways.
While it might appear to be a never-ending battle, we assure you...
THERE IS HELP!
While it might appear to be a never-ending battle, we assure you...
THERE IS HELP!
The E.P.A. (Environmental Protection Agency) recommends that Grass Clippings are PRIMARILY, intended for every homeowner's lawn! For several important reasons;
1. It SAVES YOU $$MONEY $$ !!! -
(when you blow grass clippings out of your lawn, you are blowing away WATER as well!)
2. Grass Clippings are the BEST Fertilizer for Your Lawn!
3. Blowing clippings out of your lawn, takes vital nutrients away from your property. - (Dead clippings and plants are necessary for the health of your lawn, it keeps the health of your lawn and plants, in check!)
4. Your clippings can add to clogs in public storm drains, public waterways.
5. If you have used ANY pest control, or non-organic bug spray, (within the last year), on your property, and blow clippings off your property, you could be spreading potential cancer causing agents, into our Watershed areas!
6. Even slow-release fertilizers that run-off your property onto the street into the storm drains will add pollutants to our streams and lakes - where YOU FISH!
6. Grass clippings are vital component of compost.
and last but not least,
As grass clippings are mostly water, it takes less than one week, for clippings to dematerialize into a slimy, slip-n-slide. Leaving the next rider to his fate. -
Well, to your fate. Because you, are liable for civil damages if someone is injured in front of your property, due to your actions.

TOO Many of us, as pedestrians, bicyclists and riders, have been hit by the projectiles of blowers and mowers! Did you know?... that in ANY typical walk-behind mower, the shaft spins, at about 2900 rpms or 200 mph ?! ... which means, that if it picks up a small rock, that rock becomes a projectile, traveling at about 200 mph ! (for comparison, an arrow travels at 275 mph! Yikes) |
ABATE, consisting of volunteer Riders and those who love them, across our Nation, have been fighting for the safety and rights of all motorcyclists for decades and here in North Carolina it's no different! ABATE of NC has been working hard for you, and every rider, since 1971, yes 1971, and we are not done!
In October of 2020, our dedicated volunteers constructed a committee, with the sole purpose of sweeping away every blade off grass on every roadway in North Carolina!
Spearheaded by Mike Pendergrass, we have developed the 'GREEN ICE INITIATIVE'! While it is not against the law statewide, to blow grass clippings into the roadways, that does not mean we cannot effect great change. And here's how we'll do it!
Right now, the Green Ice Initiative, is researching the codes and ordinances of every town/city and county in North Carolina. As we gather that information over next months, we will enter it into our database. Once we have completed that database, anyone, anywhere in this state, will be able to call (or email) and say, "Hey, I'm in Asheville, is there an ordinance against blowing the clippings into the street here?" and we'll be able to tell you " 'Yes', or 'No', the code, the person to call, as well as the CBA representative!" Pretty Cool!
Mike Pendergrass has also formulated the system for effecting that great change on a local level. Because as we at the CBA have figured out, "If you want to effect great change, on a national level, then do it at home, and watch it spread like wildfire!"
Mike has been talking with his local politicians, his mayor, the city council, the director of the community college, even local homeowners associations. And Mike has, hit it out of park, every time! He has not only accurately described the dangers to pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists, but the danger to our economy in every one of our towns, if we let this lazy atrocity continue. In truth, most towns do already contain the words "grass clippings' in the ordinance against littering. We just need to enforce it.
Mike approached his Mayor with a plan, that would make his town more beautiful and would make them more money! Win + Win! Mike asked his Mayor to hold a 'Public Service Announcement' Campaign for 6 months. This first step might be to place a banner/notice on the town website reminding residents to 'grasscycle' or 'grasscape'. Whenever a patrol car sees a situation that warrants, he'll stop and advise the resident that he/she had violated the town ordinance. That resident would be advised that they will not receive a fine at that time, and would be asked not to violate it again. After the 6th month campaign, the mayor bestows the authority to police cruisers, to cite citizens with the ordinance (yes, they will receive a citation, with the corresponding fine) at their discretion.
We look forward to providing more updates in the months to come!
